The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized to promote activism. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an intern at the studio that was small. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
